Two camps. Paste a few how/what lines into an outline and hope. Or deploy conversational keywords as a stack you can verify in Google Search Console. Live demand beats vibes.
Not one binary. A small toolchain – free GSC, a PAA mapper, a question visualizer – wired into headings, FAQs, and answer blocks that match how people actually ask.
System requirements
Minimum kit:
- OS: any modern desktop browser (Chrome/Firefox/Edge/Safari).
- Accounts: Google account with Search Console ownership on the property you’ll work on.
- RAM/CPU/disk: spreadsheet + web UIs. 8 GB RAM is comfortable with large CSV exports open.
- Dependencies: Sheets or Excel; optional paid seats on AlsoAsked or AnswerThePublic after free caps.
- Recommended: 90+ days of GSC data so quiet long queries show up.
No GSC ownership? Stop. Get verified first. You can’t prove the install worked without it.
Official sources (download the stack)
Grab these in order:
- Google Search Console – queries already hitting your site.
- AlsoAsked – live People Also Ask trees by country/language/city.
- AnswerThePublic – question/preposition maps; free tier is tight.
Semrush/Ahrefs question filters help if you already pay – volume and CPC, not the zero-volume conversational strings GSC already logged.
Install: step-by-step setup
Provision once. Reuse the filters.
1. Wire Google Search Console for long queries
- Open Performance → Search results.
- Date range: at least last 3 months.
- + New → Query → Custom (regex) → Matches regex.
- Paste a 6+ word filter (pattern shared in community GSC writeups, including Search Engine Roundtable’s conversational-query notes):
([^ ]*s){5,}
Five or more spaces → six-plus words. Some operators run ([^" "]*s){7,}? for 7+. Pick one. Stick with it.
Export. Sort impressions ascending too. Quiet long queries are often the ones keyword tools never model.
2. Stand up AlsoAsked
- alsoasked.com → live search on a seed (brand, product, problem phrase).
- Country + language = your audience. City targeting matters for local intent.
- Standard depth first. Deep Search costs more credits; the vendor claims ~150 questions average per deep run.
- PNG for writers. CSV when the plan includes it – free tiers are search-capped (roughly a few runs per day, same class of faucet as other freemium PAA tools) and skip volume/CPC.
3. Add AnswerThePublic (watch the free meter)
- Account at answerthepublic.com.
- Free plan: up to 3 searches per day (per their free-plan help docs). Refreshing or updating a report burns another search.
- One seed. Export. Stop. Don’t reload the wheel for fun.
Pro tip: Batch seeds the night before. Free ATP is a daily faucet, not a hose.
First-time configuration (minimum viable)
One working pipeline. Not a 200-row dump.
- Pick 5 seed topics tied to revenue or support load.
- From the GSC regex export, keep queries with clear intent and a page that could own the answer.
- From AlsoAsked, keep repeated branch themes – not every leaf.
- Map each theme to one URL (expand existing, or one new FAQ/guide).
- Under an H2 that mirrors the question, draft a direct answer block first. Industry snippet roundups citing Ahrefs/SEMrush-style analyses often land paragraph answers in a ~40-60 word band. Write that block, then the rest of the section.
Sheet columns: Seed | Conversational query | Source (GSC/PAA/ATP) | Target URL | Answer drafted (Y/N) | Schema FAQ (Y/N).
Ever rewritten a page for a tool’s “volume 10” term while GSC sat on a 9-word question with real impressions and zero care? That’s the hole this stack plugs.
Verify the install works
Mind maps don’t count. Traffic and visibility do.
- GSC re-check (2-4 weeks after publish): exact question or shared stem – impressions first, then CTR/position.
- SERP check: full phrase, incognito, target country. Note PAA. Check whether your H2-aligned answer is extractable.
- Sanity sample: three deployed questions. Would the answer paragraph stand alone if someone only heard it read aloud?
Sheet should show Source = GSC on at least part of the list. Free visual tools only? Verification isn’t done.
Common install errors and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| ATP limit after one “search” | Refresh counted as a new free search | Export once; wait for daily reset |
| AlsoAsked tree looks great, no priority order | No volume layer + no GSC join; free tier also omits CPC/volume and parks CSV on paid | Join on theme; rank by GSC impressions and business value |
| Regex returns nothing | Short date range or strict word count | Widen to 6 months; try 5+ then 6+ word patterns |
| Pages only win short head terms | Question buried mid-article | Full question as H2 + short standalone answer up top |
| Paid ATP bill surprises | Geo pricing / tier mismatch | Confirm local price on the pricing page before checkout; as of the yearly pricing view, Starter/Growth/Business show about US$13.33 / $66 / $132.66 per month billed yearly (100 / 200 / 300 searches) – local charge can differ |
The catch is voice-length stats. Peer-reviewed work (ACM SIGIR voice-query study) put average voice near ~4.2 words vs ~3.2 text; some 2026 marketing pages claim much longer averages. Treat the flashy figures as disputed. Build quotas on your GSC strings – the older academic baseline is a reality check, not a traffic forecast.
Upgrade, migrate, uninstall
Upgrade path: free caps blocking weekly research? AlsoAsked paid tiers enable CSV/bulk/API/Deep Search (check current plan cards on alsoasked.com – prices move). AnswerThePublic Starter / Growth / Business as of the yearly pricing view: about US$13.33 / $66 / $132.66 per month billed yearly, with 100 / 200 / 300 monthly searches; geo-priced, so the checkout total may not match the US$ card.
Migrate from old keyword lists: keep short head terms for nav and category pages. Move supporting copy to question H2s. Don’t delete ranking URLs – remap conversational phrases onto them.
Uninstall / cleanup:
- Cancel AlsoAsked/ATP in their billing portals; revoke API keys if any.
- Remove FAQ schema for questions you no longer support.
- Archive the research sheet; document the GSC regex in the team wiki so nobody reinvents it.
FAQ
Do I need paid tools to deploy conversational keywords?
No. GSC plus manual PAA expansion ships a first wave. Pay when exports and mapping speed matter more than a few seeds a week.
What’s a concrete first deploy on a SaaS help center?
One high-churn feature. Run the 6+ word GSC regex, pull AlsoAsked on the feature name, add three H2s for the repeated questions, drop a self-contained short answer under each, link the existing how-to. Two weeks later, re-check impressions on those queries. Full loop. No redesign.
Aren’t conversational keywords just long-tail keywords with better branding?
Overlap exists. Deploy difference is intent shape. Long-tail can still be staccato (“crm pricing startup annual”). Conversational forms carry grammar, constraints, spoken cadence (“what crm pricing makes sense for a 12-person startup billed annually”). Volume-only sorts bury them; GSC regex and PAA trees surface them. If you never join live queries to page answers, you’re collecting phrases – not deploying them.
Open Search Console. Paste ([^ ]*s){5,}. Export twenty rows. Assign each a URL before you open another keyword toy.
