Will downloading an “abliterated” GGUF actually stop the refusals?
That’s what most people type after a Hugging Face card tagged abliterated or heretic. Often yes for the stock “I can’t help with that” reflex – if the edit was clean, the chat template matches the base, and you still own safety outside the weights.
Abliteration mutes a refusal-related direction in an open-weight model. Activations or weights. No full retrain. No jailbreak string every session. The name is ablation + obliteration (FailSpy’s early label stuck).
Quick context: what the edit actually does
Erase one residual-stream direction and harmful instructions stop getting the canned no; add it back and harmless prompts start refusing. That single-direction story is from Arditi et al. (arXiv:2406.11717) across 13 open chat models up to 72B. Maxime Labonne’s Hugging Face write-up turned the paper into a recipe people actually run.
You contrast activations on harmful vs harmless prompts, take the mean difference as the refusal vector, then project it out of residual-writing weights – or subtract it at inference. Weight edits live in the file. Runtime hooks die when the hook is off.
| Approach | What changes | Persists? |
|---|---|---|
| System-prompt jailbreak | Prompt text | No |
| Uncensored fine-tune | Many weights via gradients | Yes (costly; quality can drift) |
| Abliteration | Refusal direction in activations/weights | Yes for weight edits |
abliteration.ai’s docs put it bluntly: refusals down ≠ tool use, code quality, or multilingual behavior stay the same. You still measure.
Hands-on: abliteration without drowning in TransformerLens
Two beginner paths. Pick one.
Path A – Run a pre-abliterated GGUF (fastest)
- Install Ollama or LM Studio.
- Find a reputable GGUF on Hugging Face (
abliteratedorheretic+ your base family). Prefer cards that name base revision, method, and any KL/refusal numbers. - Pull and chat. Pattern community runners use:
ollama run hf.co/mlabonne/Meta-Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct-abliterated-GGUF:Q4_K_M
Q4_K_M is the usual starting quant – smaller than full weights, usually saner than the lowest bits. LM Studio: paste the repo into Discover, pick quant, download, load.
Same prompt on base vs edit. Base refuses a scoped technical ask and the edit answers coherently? Direction work landed. Both refuse, or the edit spews junk? Wrong template, bad quant, or a weak edit. Don’t argue with the output – swap the file.
Path B – Make your own with Heretic (one command)
Heretic wraps directional ablation in Optuna TPE: fewer refusals and low KL from the original on harmless prompts. README path:
pip install -U heretic-llm
heretic Qwen/Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507
Any supported HF id or local path. Small models on one high-end consumer GPU: often tens of minutes (hardware-dependent). It prints refusals and KL, so you can trash a bad run instead of shipping it.
Pro tip: Keep base and abliterated side by side. Feels “dumber”? Re-run your eval set on both. Tags lie.
No local weights? abliteration.ai hosts OpenAI-compatible endpoints. As of their late-2026 pricing docs (figures move): abliterated-model about $1.00 input / $0.10 cached / $3.00 output per 1M tokens; large / large-v2 near $3 / $0.30 / $5 with bigger context windows (~256K and 1M on the docs). Recheck before you budget.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Zero capability cost. Careful edits keep most benchmarks close. Crude layer/strength picks spike KL and dent knowledge or coding. Heretic’s published Gemma-3-12B numbers: same refusal drop (~3/100) at KL ~0.16 vs manual edits above 1.0.
- Chat templates. Stale template in a community fork mangles the rendered prompt. Looks like “abliteration failed” when the math is fine. Match the base template exactly.
- One-shot on reasoning models. Thinking-token families (Qwen3-style) often need separate refusal directions or gradual layerwise strength. Single default pass → stubborn nos or weird coherence dips.
- No outer policy. The edit removes a tendency, not your legal or product obligations. Filters, allowlists, logging stay outside the weights.
Think of the refusal direction like a single loud channel on a mixer. Mute it and the rest of the mix is still there – but every other track can shift a little. You only hear it on real songs, not sine waves.
People talk about abliteration like flipping a safety switch and getting the same model back. That mental picture is comforting. It’s also how you ship a checkpoint that quietly argues harder for risky plans while your MMLU still looks fine.
Performance and results you should actually check
Paper-level claim: surgical refusal cut, limited collateral on the original suite. In practice it depends on base model, layers touched, and whether anyone “heals” with light fine-tuning afterward.
Measure yourself:
- Refusal rate on a fixed harmful set (plus a hard benign set for over-refusal).
- KL or plain side-by-side on harmless tasks you care about.
- Your real scores – coding tests, RAG faithfulness, tool-call format.
Later work finds multiple geometrically distinct refusal-related directions across categories (multi-direction refusal research). Linear steering still acts like a shared knob; the style of refusal moves more than a clean on/off. Separate audits (arXiv:2607.17427) report more optimism on decisions and shifts in confidence/justification length – even when accuracy looks flat. Fewer nos ≠ same decision-maker.
When NOT to use abliteration
Provider-grade safety guarantees, regulated consumer chat, or any place where over-compliance beats a polite no? Skip it.
API-only closed models? You need weights. Crude public checkpoints in production agents with zero evals? You’re importing someone else’s unmeasured disposition shift.
Base model already answers your domain and only chokes on awkward wording → prompt policy + logging is enough. You need style change, not just refusal removal → proper uncensored fine-tune. Open weights, local control, stubborn safety training, and you can own outer guardrails → abliteration earns a seat.
Next: one small instruct model you already run. Documented abliterated GGUF or one Heretic pass. Ten fixed prompts, base vs edit. Then touch anything larger.
FAQ
Is abliteration the same as a jailbreak?
No. Jailbreak = prompt text for one session. Abliteration = weaker refusal direction every load.
Do abliterated models never refuse?
Less, not never. Strength hangs on base, layers, prompt. Hosted and local cards still show residual nos – read the publisher’s probes, then run yours.
Example: answers aggressive red-team coding, still hedges on medical self-harm phrasing if that behavior sat partly outside the ablated direction.
Will my MMLU (or coding) score stay identical?
Not guaranteed. Clean runs often sit within noise; sloppy orthogonalization can cost several points on sensitive suites. Disposition probes show behavioral drift even when accuracy looks flat. Just run paired eval on your workload and treat each checkpoint as a new release.
