I uploaded my mix to LANDR. Sounded great in my DAW. Two minutes later, I downloaded the master and it was… louder. But also somehow worse.
That was 2019. I didn’t know the #1 mistake yet.
The Problem Nobody Tells You About
You spent hours on your mix. Levels are balanced, compression is tight, everything sits right. You export, upload to an AI mastering tool, hit the button. The algorithm does its thing.
Your mix peaked at -0.2dB. The AI added limiting to bring it to commercial loudness. The limiter slammed into your peaks, squashed your transients, introduced distortion you can’t hear on laptop speakers but will absolutely hear on good headphones.
The mistake? You sent a mix with no headroom.
LANDR’s guidelines say leave about -10 dBFS of peak headroom, average levels around -18 dBFS. Most producers don’t. They send mixes already hitting -0.1dB because that’s what sounds “loud” in the DAW.
Why This Happens (And Why It Matters More Than You Think)
AI mastering isn’t magic. Stereo bus processing – EQ, compression, limiting – applied by an algorithm trained on thousands of commercial tracks. Research from Queen Mary University of London that led to LANDR’s development (the company launched in 2014) showed machine learning can analyze frequency balance, dynamics, loudness.
But it can’t time-travel.
Your mix already hits 0dB? The AI has two choices: do nothing (you wonder why you paid $10), or apply processing that will cause clipping. Most tools choose option two. Limit aggressively. Your master gets loud. The life gets crushed out of it.
There’s a second trap here that almost nobody mentions.
The Inter-Sample Peak Problem
MusicRadar tested four popular AI mastering services in December 2023. Found something disturbing: eMastered wasn’t using true peak sensing. Masters peaked at 0dBFS in the file, but when converted to MP3 by Spotify or Apple Music, inter-sample peaks caused the audio to clip – actual digital distortion on playback.
Most consumer audio doesn’t play back WAV files. Lossy formats. If your master doesn’t have headroom for format conversion, it’ll distort. Professional mastering engineers leave 0.3-1dB of safety margin for this. AI tools? Not always.
What AI Mastering Actually Does (And Doesn’t Do)
When you use LANDR, eMastered, or CloudBounce, you’re not getting “mastering” in the traditional sense. You’re getting automated stereo bus processing.
A human mastering engineer does far more. They check for clicks, pops, phase issues. Set spacing and fades between tracks for albums. Create format-specific masters – vinyl needs different treatment than streaming. Check tonal consistency across an entire release. Final quality control before distribution.
AI tools do none of this. They analyze your stereo file, apply processing, hand it back. That’s it. As one professional engineer put it in a detailed breakdown: “Mastering isn’t processing, mastering is a process.”
Does that make AI mastering useless? No. But you need to understand what you’re actually getting.
The Three Things You Must Do Before Uploading
Here’s the correct approach. I learned this after wasting money on dozens of bad AI masters and finally asking someone who knew better.
1. Leave Real Headroom
Peaks around -10dB to -6dB. Yes, it will sound quiet. That’s the point. The AI needs space to apply compression and limiting without destroying your dynamics.
In your DAW, before you export: pull down your master fader until your loudest peak hits -10dBFS. Check this with a meter, not your ears. Export as WAV, 24-bit or 32-bit float if the service accepts it.
2. Fix Your Mix First
AI mastering has a quality ceiling, directly tied to your mix quality. A blind test with 472 listeners in July 2025: human mastering engineers scored 6.4/10 and 6.1/10 for the top two spots. Best AI result? 5.8/10.
That gap exists because AI can’t fix mix problems. Bass is muddy? AI won’t unmuddy it – just makes it louder and muddier. Vocals buried? AI limiting buries them further. The algorithm assumes your mix is already balanced. It’s polishing, not repairing.
Before you upload, A/B your mix against a commercial reference track in the same genre. If your frequency balance is wildly different, fix it in the mix. Don’t ask the AI to compensate.
3. Match the Tool to Your Genre
Training data matters. Comparison testing in early 2026 found CloudBounce performs well on electronic music, hip-hop, heavily produced pop. But struggles with acoustic, orchestral, jazz. Why? The algorithm is trained primarily on dense, compressed modern genres.
Mastering a sparse acoustic track? The AI might over-process trying to match the loudness and density of its training data. Result: delicate fingerpicking sounds squashed and lifeless.
LANDR has the largest training dataset (operating since 2014), theoretically giving it better genre coverage. Masterchannel claims to avoid this problem by not using training data at all – each track is analyzed individually, according to their official description. Can’t verify that claim, but the approach is different.
When I Actually Use AI Mastering (And When I Don’t)
I still use AI mastering. Not for everything.
I use it for: demo versions I’m sending to collaborators, rough mixes I want to hear at proper loudness to check translation, single-track releases where I’m confident my mix is already 95% there and I just need the final 5% of polish and loudness.
I don’t use it for: albums (sequencing and tonal consistency across tracks matter too much), anything I’m pitching to labels, genres outside the mainstream electronic/pop/hip-hop spectrum where the training data is strong.
The cost difference matters. Human mastering runs $50-$500 per track depending on the engineer. iZotope Ozone 12 Advanced – a professional mastering suite you run in your DAW – costs $599 upfront (as of early 2026) but gives you unlimited masters and full control. LANDR is $10 per track or $9.99/month unlimited. CloudBounce is similar.
AI mastering is the middle ground for me: better than nothing, faster than hiring someone, cheaper than buying Ozone if I only need a few masters per year.

The Real Limit Nobody Talks About
Took me way too long to understand this: AI mastering depends heavily on mix quality. A human engineer makes judgment calls. Kick too loud? They’ll tell you to remix. Stereo field off? They’ll point it out.
AI just processes what you give it.
In testing, engineers uploaded mixes with problems to CloudBounce. It couldn’t resolve them. The algorithm isn’t creative. Doesn’t listen for musical intent. Matches patterns from training data, applies processing to hit loudness targets.
That’s not a criticism – it’s a design constraint. Machine learning works by recognizing patterns. Your track doesn’t fit the patterns in the training data? Results will be unpredictable.
What to Do Right Now
Pull up your last mix. Check the peak level. Anywhere near 0dB? You now know why your AI master sounded off.
Re-export with proper headroom: -10dB to -6dB peaks, average level around -18dBFS. Upload that to your AI mastering tool. The difference will be immediate.
Working on an album? Use AI mastering to get quick reference masters during the mixing phase, but hire a human engineer for the final release. The cost is worth it for the sequencing, the quality control, the second pair of experienced ears.
Still getting bad results even with proper headroom? Your mix probably needs more work. AI can’t fix balance issues. It can only make what’s already good sound louder and more polished.
