Privacy of your prompts and security of the software running them are different problems, and most reviews collapse them into a single thumbs-up.

The scenario that made me dig in

A friend in healthcare wanted to summarize patient notes without sending them to OpenAI. LM Studio looked perfect – desktop app, local inference, no cloud. She installed it. What LM Studio is, briefly, and who runs it

LM Studio was founded in 2023 by Yagil Burowski and lets users run large language models entirely offline on their own hardware. The app is free for personal use as of mid-2025 and supports GGUF, GGML, and SafeTensors model formats, plus an OpenAI-compatible local API server.

Things get interesting when you read the actual policies side by side.

What stays on your machine vs what doesn’t

Your prompts never leave. Per LM Studio’s official privacy policy, chats, histories, and documents are saved locally and never transmitted. No telemetry, no user-specific tracking.

What does leave your machine? Three things: model search and download requests (it has to fetch the file somehow), update checks, and your IP address via the CDN along with basic device info like OS version and app build. That’s the full list.

There’s a quirky side effect the docs spell out plainly: because the app doesn’t track individuals, Element Labs cannot fulfill data subject requests – no way to identify or retrieve your specific data. Privacy by design, taken to its logical end. A GDPR deletion request would have nothing to delete.

The catch most articles miss: the LM Studio Hub is a completely different product with a separate privacy policy. Create a Hub account to share configurations, and the Hub processes your account info, posted content, IP, and session data – separate permissions from the desktop app entirely. The supply-chain risk nobody talks about

In July 2025, Pillar Security disclosed an attack they called “Poisoned GGUF Templates.” The technique: malicious instructions embedded directly in a GGUF file’s chat template, executed automatically during inference. No obvious entry point. No warning. The template layer sits below input validation and output filtering – both get bypassed.

What does that actually mean for a solo user downloading Llama 3 from some random Hugging Face account? It means the model file itself is the attack surface. Not the network. Not the app. The file. That’s a different mental model than most people bring to “local AI.”

LM Studio specifically: the model discovery interface doesn’t display chat templates at all. When you download a model, the app automatically reads and prepares any embedded templates – including malicious ones – without any warning. Once a compromised GGUF is loaded, the malicious template is immediately active.

LM Studio’s response, per Pillar’s disclosure timeline: on June 20, 2025, LM Studio replied that users are responsible for reviewing and downloading trusted models from Hugging Face. Practical rule: Stick to publishers with a track record – lmstudio-community, bartowski, official org accounts on Hugging Face. Random GGUFs from accounts with three uploads are exactly the supply-chain entry point this attack targets.

A setup that actually reduces risk

Built around the real failure modes, not the imagined ones:

  1. Install from the official site only. Get the latest version from lmstudio.ai. If Defender flags the installer, check the official bug tracker before assuming the worst. At least one documented false positive has occurred on 0.3.5.
  2. Prefer SafeTensors when available. As of 2024, SafeTensors became the go-to format for model distribution because – unlike older Python pickle formats – it was designed to eliminate the risk of executing malicious code during model loading. GGUF is fine for performance, but the format trade-off matters here.
  3. Stick to vetted publishers. Don’t download a 4B model from a Hugging Face account created last week.
  4. Block outbound network for inference sessions if you’re being thorough. The app runs offline. Prove it to yourself with a firewall rule – not a vibes-based trust exercise.
  5. Default API port is 1234. If you change it in LM Studio, update any reverse-proxy config accordingly. Don’t expose it to the open internet without authentication.

The fine print most people skip

The App Terms of Service caps Element Labs’ aggregate liability at $50.00. All claims, all scenarios. That’s the legal ceiling if something goes wrong. Standard for free software – but worth knowing before you build a regulated workflow on top of it.

Separate issue: the privacy posture is strong, but it’s not audited. No SOC 2, no published third-party security review of the application binary. “Trust but verify” applies here – and the verifying is on you.

Honest limitations
