Runway AI Video: A Beginner’s Guide That Skips the Fluff

A Runway tutorial that skips the model list and shows you how to avoid burning 625 credits in three clips - with real credit math and workarounds.

6 min readBeginner

Here’s the number nobody puts on the pricing page in bold: 125 free credits ≈ 6 seconds of finished video. That’s the entire free trial. One prompt, one bad take, and you’re out. This is the reality of Runway that every beginner tutorial dances around.

So this guide isn’t going to walk you through the signup form. You can find that button. Instead, we’re going to answer the question that actually matters for a beginner: how do I not burn my credits on garbage?

The problem: Runway looks generous until you do the math

Most tutorials open with the model lineup – Gen-4, Gen-4 Turbo, Gen-4.5, plus routed third-party models like Veo and Kling. Impressive list. It’s also a trap, because each model burns credits at a wildly different rate, and the interface doesn’t stop you from picking the expensive one by accident.

Here’s what a Standard plan ($12/month annual) actually gets you at 625 credits/month, per independent pricing analysis:

Model Seconds you can generate/month Best for
Gen-4.5 (flagship) ~25 seconds Hero shot, one attempt
Gen-4 ~52 seconds Iterating on a look
Gen-4 Turbo ~125 seconds Drafts, tests, ideation

Read that Gen-4.5 row again. Twenty-five seconds. Not per day. Per month. And if you re-run a single prompt four times to check consistency – a normal QA practice – you’ve spent your month on one idea.

Why the standard “tutorial approach” fails

Every guide out there tells you to “start with Gen-4.5 because it’s the best.” Technically true. Runway’s Gen-4.5, announced December 1, 2025, holds the No. 1 spot on the Artificial Analysis Video Arena leaderboard and is strong at physics, human motion, camera movements, and cause and effect. The independent Elo score is 1,247. It’s genuinely a good model.

But “best model” and “best model for a beginner” aren’t the same thing. You need reps. You need to fail, adjust the prompt, fail again, learn what the model likes. Doing that on Gen-4.5 is like learning to drive in a rented Ferrari that charges by the meter.

The recommended approach: iterate cheap, finalize expensive

The workflow that actually preserves credits looks like this:

  1. Draft on Gen-4 Turbo. Cheap, fast, forgiving. Use it to test whether your prompt roughly produces the shot you’re imagining. If the composition is wrong here, no version of the prompt will save it on Gen-4.5.
  2. Refine on Gen-4. Once the concept holds up, step up to Gen-4 to check motion and character consistency. Gen-4 introduced a reference image conditioning system that keeps characters, objects, and environments visually consistent across separate generations without any fine-tuning. This is where you lock the look.
  3. Final render on Gen-4.5. Only when the prompt is dialed. This is your hero shot.

Feed the same reference image and the same prompt down the ladder. You’ll spend maybe 60 credits total instead of 300+.

A real example: the aspect ratio bug that ate my morning

I was generating an image-to-video shot for a landscape banner. Nice wide crop, roughly 21:9. Gen-4 Turbo threw a 400 error. I checked the aspect ratio dropdown – it was set correctly. Retried. Same error.

The error message, buried in the API response, told the real story: “Invalid asset aspect ratio. width / height ratio must be at most 2.358. Got 2.679” – and this error appears regardless of the aspect ratio selected in the UI. Gen-4 Turbo has an undocumented ceiling. The UI’s aspect ratio picker doesn’t validate against it. Your image does.

Fix: crop the source image to 2.35:1 (standard cinemascope) or narrower before uploading. The dropdown is decorative in this case.

Pro tip: Before hitting Generate, ask yourself “is this a draft or a final?” If draft, force yourself onto Gen-4 Turbo even if Gen-4.5 is tempting. The muscle memory of picking the cheap model first is worth more than any prompting trick.

The credits-expire trap nobody mentions

Standard and Pro plan credits do not roll over. End of billing cycle, the balance zeroes out. Users on Trustpilot have reported losing 400+ unused credits this way. If you subscribed on the 15th, you have until the 15th of next month – not until you cancel, not until you’ve had time to use them.

Two workarounds worth knowing. First, batch your work into the last week of the cycle if you know credits will otherwise die. Second, on Unlimited, generations route through what’s called Explore mode, an asynchronous queue that typically runs 10-20 minute waits per generation. “Unlimited” means unlimited attempts, not unlimited speed. Plan around it.

Where Runway will still let you down

Even with perfect credit hygiene, some shots are just hard for the model. Runway is unusually honest about this. Their own Gen-4.5 research page lists object permanence failures (a cup vanishing after being occluded) and “success bias” (actions disproportionately succeed – a poorly aimed kick still scoring a goal) as known limitations. These aren’t edge cases you can prompt around.

The other one: multi-person dialogue in a single frame. Cross-model testing from creative teams working with Gen-4 consistently identifies this as a category-wide weakness of current AI video, not just Runway. Plan your coverage the way a real editor would – singles, over-the-shoulder shots, cutaways. Don’t try to fit two people talking to each other into one Gen-4.5 clip.

FAQ

Is the free tier enough to learn Runway?

No. 125 one-time credits get you roughly one Gen-4.5 clip or a handful of Gen-4 Turbo drafts, then it’s gone forever – free credits don’t refresh. Use it purely to check whether the interface and output quality feel right, then decide.

Should I pay $12/month for Standard or jump straight to Pro?

Depends on one thing: how many final Gen-4.5 shots you need. Standard’s 625 credits is realistically 25 seconds of Gen-4.5 output – fine if you’re making one shot a week for social. If you’re building anything longer than a 30-second reel, or you re-run prompts 3-4 times for consistency checks, you’ll blow through Standard in a week. Pro’s 2,250 credits is the honest floor for any project with a deadline.

Can I use Runway output commercially without a watermark?

Only on paid plans. The free tier watermarks everything, and the Standard plan and up remove it. Read the current terms on the official Runway product page before shipping to a client – commercial use rights are tied to your subscription state at time of generation.

Your next 10 minutes

Open the Gen-4.5 announcement page and read Runway’s own list of model limitations. Then log in, pick Gen-4 Turbo (not Gen-4.5), and burn exactly one prompt on a shot you’re curious about. Note how many credits it consumed and what the model got wrong. That single data point is worth more than any prompting cheat sheet.
