On October 10, 2025, roughly $19 billion in leveraged crypto positions vanished in a day. At one point $3.21 billion was liquidated in sixty seconds. That is what liquidation in crypto looks like when use, clustered stop levels, and thin books collide – not a quiet margin call, but a machine that sells (or buys) for you until the math says stop.

If you trade futures or borrow in DeFi, liquidation is the automatic closure of your position when your collateral can no longer cover the required maintenance margin. The exchange or protocol does not ask. It protects the other side of the trade and its own solvency. Spot holders keep their coins when price drops. Leveraged traders often do not.

Why the usual “just lower use” advice falls short

Every beginner guide says the same three things: use less use, set a stop-loss, watch your margin. Those habits help. They also leave holes that show up the first time the market actually stress-tests you.

Most venues liquidate off the mark price, not the last traded price on your chart. Mark price is a fair-value estimate from a spot index plus basis/funding adjustments. It exists to stop wick and single-exchange manipulation from hunting accounts. Side effect: you can get liquidated while the candle still looks “safe.” That mismatch is one of the most common “I didn’t expect that” reports from new futures traders.

Funding is the slow leak nobody puts on the avoid-list poster. Crowded longs pay shorts (or vice versa) on a schedule. Over hours or days the debit eats margin even if spot barely moves, and your liquidation price creeps closer. A guide that only models one sharp drop misses the bleed.

And when liquidations fail hard and insurance funds run thin, many CEX perp venues flip to auto-deleveraging (ADL). How liquidation in crypto is actually calculated

Initial margin is what you post to open (roughly notional ÷ use). Maintenance margin is the lower equity floor. When mark-price losses push equity under that floor, the engine takes over. Isolated-margin approximation many calculators use:

Long liq price ≈ Entry × (1 - 1/Leverage + MMR)

Long at $70,000, 10×, MMR 0.5%. Rough liq near $63,350 – about a 9.5% adverse move before fees. At 50× the same math leaves only a couple of percent of room. Ordinary BTC days liquidate books like that.

Isolated margin boxes the damage to the collateral you assigned that trade. Cross pools account equity: other green positions can buy time, but one bad idea can drain the account. Some platforms trim size to restore the margin ratio instead of full close. Treat that as a last resort the engine might use – never as your plan.

The useful part was not the headline that started the move. It was the loop. Highly leveraged positions share similar liquidation bands. Forced market orders hit those bands, push mark/index further, hit the next band, and so on. Human reaction time is irrelevant when billions clear in a minute. Funding, crowded books, and any ADL episodes (venues rank profitable opposing positions by use and profit – Bybit’s ADL docs describe the last-resort path) turn individual risk into system-wide deleveraging.

Position design that survives normal chaos

Forget predicting the next wick. Design so a normal bad day does not end the account.

  1. Size from loss, not from desire. Decide the maximum dollar loss you accept on the idea. Back into notional and use so that even a full isolated wipe stays inside that number.
  2. Put the stop where the thesis dies – and keep it clear of liquidation. A stop parked 0.2% above your liq price is just an earlier liquidation with extra fees. Leave real room for slippage.
  3. Prefer isolated for speculative shots; know cross is account-level risk. Read the venue’s margin mode docs before you click.
  4. Watch funding and mark, not only the candle. Paying heavy funding while already near maintenance means time is working against you.
  5. Assume cascade liquidity is worse than the book looks. Visible depth vanishes when everyone is a forced seller.

Pro tip: Before every leveraged entry, write down three numbers: entry, invalidation (your stop), and the exchange-shown liquidation price. If invalidation is not comfortably between entry and liquidation, cut size or skip the trade. That single habit filters most account-ending setups.
